IIRC in the early-mid 70s, there was cut & cover done on 2nd ave in East Harlem in the 110s-120s. which made for wooden planking replacing asphalt. I remember riding downtown on 2nd ave on timber roadway, as the Hgy dept called it back then.
They posted signs, "Caution, timber roadway ahead, slippery conditions" and it was indeed. Wet wood made for lousy traction.
