B&O Railroad Museum to re-enact Lincoln's funeral trainBy Joanna Sullivan Jan 23, 2015, 11:26am ESTCourtney B. Wilson calls President Abraham Lincoln's funeral train arriving in Baltimore nearly 150 years ago "one of the nation's saddest and most contemplative events."
Wilson, who heads the B&O Railroad Museum, says that's why the museum will commemorate the event in a "very solemn manner" when the museum recreates the funeral train's Baltimore stay April 18-19.
The re-enactment is part of a weekend full of commemorative events planned. It also features the museum's acclaimed exhibit, "The War Came by Train."
Among the activities planned:- A replica of the coffin will be placed in the museum's National Historic Landmark Roundhouse.
- Civil War soldier and civilian re-enactors will participate in the ceremonies and researched authentic funeral music will be provided by the Federal City Brass Band.
- The Museum's 1863 locomotive "Thatcher Perkins" will accompany the ceremony and be decorated exactly like the Lincoln Funeral Train.
- Each ceremony will be narrated by author and guest curator Daniel Carroll Toomey.
- The formal narrated commemoration will take place at 11:30 a.m. on both April 18 and 19.
