I compare the Brighton Track wall graffiti to the acid and scratch damaged glass on virtually every subway car after the spray paint and markers were dealt with regularly. The vandals knew that they could scratch the glass or use the etching acid and the tags would remain for years. Then after the NTT's were delivered and the TA used the protective glass screens the vandals eventually gave up. It is important to note that the plastic screens do not prevent scratching or acid, but it is easier for the TA to simply remove the damaged barrier and install another one. The bottom line is the vandals eventually realized that the TA is now maintaining the glass. Today it is very rare to see vandalized glass on subway cars, buses and even bus stop shelters. Now if they could only address elevator glass, glass panes in stations such as 50th & 8, 57th & 6th, Grand Central, that would make a difference. THey should also finally address the scratches on the interior walls of the R-62 / R-68. They have had those scratches for almost three decades now.
