Back in the day when the TA required all crews to be in uniforms which prior to 1966 they were required to purchase out of their own pockets, the #1 senior IRT M/M Freddie Day would wear a dark suit, white shirt and tie with a diamond stickpin and a fedora hat to operate his train. The required uniform at the time was overalls in either the pinstripe or hickory stripe and although most M/M disn’t wear them, a matching jumper (jacket) and either a black silk cap similar to the C/R cap or the RR style matching striped cap with badge attached. He retired in 1960 when he reached the maximum retirement age of 70. |
