If you read the personal accounts of the "racers", the person who took PATH to Newark to catch the 62 bus arrived in Newark at 4:13.The person who took the subway to Penn caught the 4:07 out of Penn "with only a minute to spare". The inconsistencies of the NJT schedule to EWR (sometimes trains less than 10 minutes apart, sometimes a 30 minute gap in service) means that in this case they would have caught the same train at both Penn and Newark Penn. At other times of the day, however, there could be a significant difference in outcomes in favor of the Path-NJT-Airtrain combo. (Assume for example that the racer going via NY Penn had just missed -- rather than just missed -- the train and then there was a 30 minute gap in the schedule. |
