I just saw a 7 train on the Q line

So there I am riding the R local downtown about an hour ago, stopping at Prince St, and I look over to see a 7 train pass by, a full R-62A consist. Empty, of course, with a few vest-wearers inside. The LED indicators were on, showing local.

Now, I understand HOW the train got there: The switches at Queensboro Plaza station. I can guess as to WHY: To get to the Coney Island Yards. But why would that train need to get there, and why would that transfer take place so relatively early on a weekday night?
