This is actually a good point. Just about everywhere I've seen platform barriers, there is either only one route stopping on that track (so it's clearly designated by platform signage) or there is a live display (e.g. AirTrain) that tells you which train it is. If the station has countdown clocks and they are dependable and placed closely together, they can do the job.
