"No one realized how close Lawrence and Jay was until the passageway was built."Actually there were plenty of us who realized just how close those stations were. There were plenty of weekends when the A & C trains were not meeting the #4 and #5 trains at Fulton Street/Broadway/Nassau for some reason - tunnel re-routes, GO's, etc. I would take the R-train to Lawrence Street EXITING the station and walking one block to the A & C trains at Jay Street was my alternative path to work. Plenty of times I just paid an extra fare to make this "out of system" transfer, in the days of the Blue Metro-Card. I despised the time consuming trips to travel to West 4th Street and back and all-around just to get to/from my job in Brooklyn. The connection between the A & C trains and the #4 and #5 remains the only transfer station between those lines. The movement to the Unlimited Gold Metro-Card, simply meant that this out-of-system transfer did not cost any extra money. This issue has been talked about on this forum before. The recently built transfer just makes the trips to/from home easier, except when there was a hurricane that closes the Montague Street tunnel, and the A & C trains are having a GO with trips back & forth to/from West 4th Street leaving one to make "out-of-system" transfers between the Borough Hall #4 & #5 station and the Jay Street station. There ARE plenty of us who realized just how close the Lawrence Street and Jay Street stations are/were. Mike |
