Long Island Rail Road trains were delayed, diverted and canceled during the morning rush-hour Thursday, in part because vandals stole copper wiring that disrupted the signal system east of Mineola, officials said.

The railroad stressed that fail-safe systems ensured against any safety issues. A spokesman could not immediately say how the theft occurred.

The disruptions affected service to Huntington, Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma

Additionally, unrelated signal trouble at Penn Station affected service to Manhattan and forced trains on the Babylon and Hempstead branches to terminate service at the Atlantic Terminal. Riders were able to access the subway.
Officials said a total of 65 morning peak-service trains were affected by the disruptions, with five cancellations.

The average delays ran between 10 and 15 minutes.

The signal problems at Mineola were first reported at about 4:30 a.m., railroad spokesman Sal Arena said. The thefts at Nassau Interlocking -- east of the station -- are being investigated by the Metropolitan Transportation police.

The signal problems at Penn were unrelated, officials said, though the cause of those disruptions was not clear.

The signal trouble prevented the railroad from normal use of one of the four East River Tunnels, which are owned and operated by Amtrak. Officials said repairs are underway.

The Montauk branch also experienced issues on Thursday, after the derailment of a nonpassenger train between Greenport and Ronkonkoma that led to planned track work.

Not a good morning for LIRR riders.
