Just because it wasn't called a "subway" doesn't make it not a subway. London has subways but local terminology refers to them as the "Underground" but they are still subways generically unless you want to get technical about the sub surface lines which are really open cuts with scattered tunnel portions. The tube lines are definitely subway construction, however. By the way, the same goes for the PATH. Even though it is jurisdictionally a railroad, the underground portions are still generically a subway!
