Officials confirmed Wednesday night that 18 cars derailed at the CSX Rail Yard in Selkirk at about 7:40 p.m. Chief Bill Asprion said the cause of the derailment is unknown, but the incident was a domino effect. He called the situation a “headache” because the rainy weather would make it hard for crews to clear the tracks. No injuries were reported. Asprion said bulldozer-type machines were coming to the scene to clear the tracks. Officials said nothing leaked from the derailed cars and CSX would be handling the case. According to Asprion, some cars came close to propane tanks but there is no sense of danger, and the scene is safe. “We've surveyed the scene,” he said. “There's a couple cars in there with some hazardous material on it. They have not been impacted in any way, shape or form from any of the other cars that are derailed. Most of the cars that are derailed are empty.” The Albany County Sheriff and County Executive were also at the scene overnight. They tell NEWS10 ABC they are not too happy, because they were not notified by CSX when the derailment happened -- something they've been demanding for a while. "They're not calling us. Every time we take a step forward, we step back. It's getting frustrating because as we become the third busiest hub we are going to see more of this,” said Dan McCoy, Albany County Executive. A representative from CSX, however, says they reported the incident in the time frame required. He also confirmed that three cars involved in the derailment had propane, acid, and weed killer in them.
