I even had that when I lived along the Montauk branch in Suffolk. We were near a bunch of grade crossings and you could hear the train coming from miles away. Back before the sterile "new" trains.....you could actually tell which engine was on the train as some had distinctive horns. Once the "new" trains came....I could tell if a freight train was coming as the still used the MP15s.
Once I married I moved and now live along the Mainline east of Ronkonkoma about the same distance away as I did along the south shore. Of course a lot less train action of course.....but the flip side is I do get much more freight now as I live west of the Brookhaven Rail Terminal Yard in Yaphank....so lots of freight goes through..... I like hearing the trains in the middle of the night. While not as many as the Montauk branch which had lots of scheduled passenger trains.....there are freights that go through and other moves
