Don't recall if I posted these signs in the previous post:

I should have posted an aerial shot of the museum so you could see its size. Here it is:

The York train station is at the top of the photo on the curve. You can see the walkway that crosses over two tracks to the parking lot. Walk down the stairs and after a few hundred feel make a left turn, then another left turn before the Ferris wheel and you're at the entrance to the museum.

The long narrow white building in the center of the picture is the visitors entrance. Immediately to its right in the picture is the former goods (freight) hall where the Royalty cars are kept. Also in the goods hall is a very nice cafe with a variety of hot and cold dishes as well as desserts.

The white Quonset-hut looking building is called the Great Hall and is where the turntable is located and where many, many locomotives are stored. It was engine shed number four - one of nine in York. Built in 1877 the shed was used to house, clear and prepare steam locomotives for the mainline. In April 1942, along with York Station, it was badly damaged in a German air raid but repaired: many others nearby weren't so lucky. I'll post pictures from in there in a few days. A vast collection of artifacts like dishware, silver, memorabilia, large-scale models, and anything else you can think of is also here. I'm talking about thousands of pieces; you'll see some of it in future photos.

The two white and brown pitch roof buildings to the left of the visitors entrance is where restoration work is done. I'll post some pictures of in there as well. And now, on the the photos!

Exiting the goods hall you see the doors that lead in and out:

Continue walking forward and you walk into the yard where rolling stock waiting to be restored is kept, as well as equipment currently used for charters and excursions:

This could be a shot taken in the 1940's:

No. 4905 and her siblings in the photo below are British Railways Mark 1 coaches built in the early 1960's. They are currently used for charters and that day the train was being prepared for use. I don't know what class car 3545 is:

Pulling the Mk 1's is Class 47 no. 47245 lettered for West Coast Railways. There were 512 built between 1962 and 1968. Originally fitted with a 2,750 hp diesel it was derated to 2580 to improve reliability. Many are still in use today:

Before heading inside the Great Hall I caught a shot of something for kids of all ages:

Entering the Great Hall there is an antechamber with a few interesting pieces. Most obvious is the Big Hook, a North Eastern Railways 13 ton steam crane, built in 1907:

Next we have Teddy, an 0-4-0 shunter built in 1941:

And then came Maude. Built in 1891 she was designed to pull light freight trains on the North British Railway:

Next to Maude was a D200 Class 40 diesel. There were 200 built between 1958 and 1962. originally built for express passenger service they later were relegated to secondary passenger service and freight. The last unit was retired in 1985:

And that's it for tonight! Much more over the weekend.
