The car needs to be equipped with some form of odometer for CBTC operation. That could take the form of the R143's rail imaging system. But after the failure of that system today it would require an unbraked idler axle on one of the trucks. Losing power and braking on one axle of 20 in a five car set is not going to be a problem, but losing 25% of the traction in a car is an untenable proposition. There's also a lot to be said for sharing traction power systems, compressors, and other components amongst a five car set rather than maintaining five of each item. |
