Weekend service on the Long Island Rail Road's West Hempstead branch will soon return, the LIRR's president said Monday.

The service, axed in 2010 as part of a larger cost-cutting initiative, highlights several new investments announced by Patrick Nowakowski at a meeting of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's LIRR committee.

The LIRR will also enhance service from Babylon to Patchogue, to and from Atlantic Terminal for events at Barclays Center, on the Oyster Bay branch, and to Montauk, which will have some summer seasonal trains extended through Thanksgiving.

Other investments include adding cars on some trains to address lack of seating, expanded cleaning efforts at Jamaica Station, and improvements at Penn Station.

"It's just some signage, but every little bit helps," Nowakowski said.

Nowakowski did not say when the improvements will be implemented, or what the total cost to the agency will be. More details are expected at a Monday afternoon meeting of the full MTA Board that will include an update of the MTA's financial plan.

The LIRR upgrades are part of a larger package of service investments across all of the MTA's agencies.

The elimination of weekend trains on the West Hempstead line was among one of the more severe service cuts from the MTA's effort in 2010 to close a $900-million budget gap. The LIRR targeted the line at the time because of relatively low ridership. The agency said at the time that only about 350 people rode on the line on weekends.

Local elected officials and civic activists have long lobbied to have the service restored, noting that several new commercial and residential developments have since emerged, including the West 130 luxury apartment complex adjacent to the West Hempstead LIRR station, and the New York Equestrian Center on Eagle Avenue.

Malverne Mayor Patricia McDonald and Rosalie Norton, president of West Hempstead Community Support Association, were both in attendance for the morning committee meeting.
