Well, maybe one could surface. They were running until '57 or '58(?) and by that time some enterprising railfan(s) could have carried a samller reel to reel onto the train, along with a portable battery.

I read about some students, from Brooklyn Tech (? - not the right name I know, but I mean the engineering school in Brooklyn) who did this with a full size tape recorder & battery on one of the earlier Lo-V trips during the '60s

Maybe someone could record either the Hi-V at Branford, or Seashor operating. You would only be hearing the "outdoors" sound however.
