They WERE singles as delivered but the MTA in its infinite wisdom decided to unitize them. By the way, as originally designed, the R-68s were supposed to have convertible cabs at both ends like the R-62s. The main difference would have been that the cab could be converted to/from a transverse cab by a crew member unlike the R-62s which required the installation of a supporting post by a member of the Car Equipment Dept. When the cab was in the corner position, a passenger seat could be folded down like the seats in the wheelchair area of the buses. When the cab was extended to the transverse position, the seat would be folded up and the off side bulkhead opened and locked into place much like the back portion of IRT Lo-V cab doors. During manufacture, the MTA changed the specs so that the #1 end of the car would have a transverse cab and the #2 end would have a corner cab. Due to the original specs, when the R-68s were delivered, they had C/R door controls in both cabs but the #2 end door controls were subsequently removed. For whatever reason, the MTA decided to unitize most of the single cars of the R-62 and 62A series into 5 car units and 68 and 68A series into 4 car units thus destroying any hope of operational flexibility. Even the bMT after unitizing the steels into B units, retained a few cars as singe As in order to increase its trains in increments from 6 cars to either 7 or 8 depending on the needs of the service and decrease 8 car consists back to 6 when longer trains were not required. The MTA's current scheme allows only foe maximum length or half length trains with no option for anything in between.
