Yes. It's similar to what the MTA used to do (or not do) on the Broadway Brooklyn line. They did their best to hide the fact that there was a direct connection between Essex St and Midtown, as if people got the taste for it, they would DEMAND it, as it is a much better service than the Nassau Line. They rarely used it for GO's. Most people had absolutely no idea that track connection existed (talking general public here), as most of the people in the areas affected, weren't around when it was lasted used in normal service.
It took "cost cutting" to finally introduce the service again, and it was a match made in heaven for two dead end lines.
I always said that Ridgewood, Bushwick, etc were completely quiet when they decided to FINALLY reroute the M train up it...(their only "complaint" was that they keep the M letter instead of calling it V), but the same quiet neighborhoods would be a mob scene if they ever tried to take it away now that they have the taste for it (Most of the M stations have seen double digit increases in ridership each year since it took effect).
