I've been involved with other online forums and as distasteful as it is, it's absolutely necessary. The choice is either to moderate and eject persistent problem posters or lose the good people because they can't be bothered dealing with the troublemakers or even just wading through the problem posts. It does take someone with a tough hide to do the moderating, though, because right away whoever does it starts to look like a heavy. If it's not done, though, eventually all that remain are the troublemakers. Remember Gresham's Law. That deals with money but the underlying principal applies to lots of other things too.
