They did a lot of refurbishments on them. Some of the BR275s were built into BR276s, which ran up until 2000 (as BR 476).

The BR277/477s were the last of the old cars to retire in 2003. The average age of the S-Bahn cars up until the new trains arrived was around 55 years old.
