Chicago's 4000s had an AMU system which lacked the electric add on of the AMUE as found on most NYCTS prewar equipment. Since Chicago ran shorter trains than NY ultimately did, the company probably felt it was unnecessary to go to the expense of having E/P brakes on 2 and 4 car trains. Even when longer trains were operated, they were usually no longer than 6 cars and a strictly pneumatic brake system was adequate for that length of train as was also the case with BMT C types and Qs which operated in similar consists. |
