Thanks for the explanation. To second chud1, very interesting.

I have been told that the HI-V's had a deeper growl/hum when they started up:
I was on a northbound Lex local with my Dad in maybe summer 1956 or '57. We'd get on at 59th. St. coming upstairs from the BMT, and get off at 86th St. close to where his office was.

I remember when the train started up, the hum was very much louder than the R9's and ramped up in pitch immediately - it seemed to do this in almost seconds. When we stopped, the entire train shook, clanged, and felt as though it would fall apart.
Can anyone who rode Hi-V's in local service, confirm that this is what they sounded like? Or could it have just been a poorly maintained Lo-V?
If the latter, this would have been the one time I rode Hi-V's.
