I remember those cars on the E and F in the 1970s, when I was a little guy. Somehow, the slant front and large sign made them seem "aggressive" (I didn't know the word then, but still had the impression), and therefore, appropriate for use on the express. Also, once R44s and R46s came on the F first, the E seemed really like the bully on the block, as it was all (or mostly) Slant 40s for a good while longer.

In their last years on the BMT (usually the W, but sometimes the N), I could always tell when one was coming into the station, as they were much louder than R68s. But my fondest memory was sometime in November or December of 1999, on a very gray morning, when I caught one on the J out of Broad Street. I remember the "J" on the roll sign was different from the "J" on the R42s...
