It took literally 20 years for the bus vendors to get the electronic headsigns legible, but the rail folks seem to have ignored all of the lessons. You would think that having invented color coding fields for the route letters/## that since colored LEDs exist MTA would spec the proper colors on a decent sized screen, but, no. With all the whining about ADA induced features, which are generally useful for everyone, this was missed.

Using colored marker lights worked well for passengers who bothered to learn the system. My late aunt in Chicago taught me the colors on the IC Electric when I was a kid--highly useful when you want to stay under the platform roof heaters until the last minute. CTA used a red field for Express Buses and on the L A and B trains had different color fields.
