Wan't Amtrak supposed to be self sufficient within 10 years on it's onset?Amtrak was supposed to be extinct outside the northeast within 10 years. The self sufficient part was inserted to bring conservatives from both parties on board along with President Nixon to pass the legislation, but everyone involved knew there was no chance of Amtrak paying their own way. Taking title to the NEC in '76 really sent costs thru the roof. |
