The letters we use are generally called Latin letters. Arabic is written with what look like strange curlicues to me. Now the numbers we use are sometimes called "Arabic numerals", although that isn't too accurate either, as Arabic actually uses somewhat different forms for numbers, which most Westerners would not recognize. As for the substitution of "Asian" for "Oriental", it is an unfortunate case of "political correctness" which is hard to avoid. Asia is a big place, and "Asian" technically includes everyone from Arabs and Turks to Japanese and native Siberians. What used to be called "Orientals" - Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, and people of generally similar appearance - prefer to be called "Asians", but that excludes a lot of others from Asia whose appearance is quite different, the people of India being prominent among them. It is a case where we have lost a term that had a clear meaning and must now use vaguer terminology to avoid offense, and that is quite unfortunate. |
