Then consider that 10 R38's came with AC. Was that a failed venture ?

There has to be some technical difference, aside form retrofit and age, that the R32's AC sucks. M-K did both the R32 & R42.

None of the theories seem to prove out.

PATH's PA1's had it working for 45 years, though were built with it, and it was a tiny car. Not much outdoor running on their 4 routes.

200 of the the retrofit R40 Slants had it working OK for 20+ years, and they lived mostly in tunnels. For the 40 on the Eastern Division, rarely on outdoorsy the J/Z, mostly on the L train.
