MUNI Twin Peaks Tunnel Delays |
|
|
Posted by Jersey Mike on Fri May 24 22:03:31 2013 On Wednesday around 7pm I hopped on board a westbound L Travel MUNI tram to get out to the ocean and watch the sun set over the Pacific. Well after departing Castro station, on what should be the fastest part of the line, my LRV proceeded at a rather leisurely pace through the Twin Peaks Tunnel (30mph instead of the 55 or so in the Market St tunnel) and then, just before the Forest Hills station, came to a near complete stop due to congestion ahead. We then spent about 20-25 minutes crawling through the remainder of the TPT to the West Portal Station. The last time I had ridden this route I had experienced similar delays in the TPT and I was wondering if this sort of thing is considered to be standard operating procedure. I did not see any sort of advanced traffic control devices at the West Portal grand junction so if this is a recurring problem why has nothing been done to solve it. Also, speeds in the TPT are also slow even in the absence of congestion in both directions. The TPT is straight as an arrow and should be able to support the same high speed running as the Market St tunnel. Can anyone explain either of these phenomena. |
