Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Tue May 21 06:57:34 2013 The famous (or infamous) CSX SD40-2 8888, better known as the "Crazy 8s" for its runaway from Stanley Yard in Toledo, OH in 2001 (and prime motivation for the movie "Unstoppable") is about to meet the torch, quite possibly!! Famed CSX No. 8888 to be dismantled By Erik Landrum Published: May 17, 2013 CINCINNATI – CSX SD40-2 No. 8888, made famous by a runaway train incident is en route to Huntington, W. Va., rumored to be dismantled. The locomotive is dead-in-tow on train Q900 between Corbin, Ky., and Cincinnati. There it will be routed one last time to Huntington. No. 8888 was made famous on May 15, 2001, when it powered a runaway train out of CSX's Stanley Yard near Toledo and down the former Conrail main line to Columbus. The incident spawned a Hollywood movie, "Unstoppable," released in 2010 and staring Denzel Washington. Trains News Wire has reached out to CSX for comment and is awaiting a response. |
