NICTD is a commuter railroad per APTA, NTD, and the FTA. It's only amongst rail fans that anyone attempts to draw any sort of distinction between electric commuter rail and the South Shore's operation based entirely on its street running. If there were to be an interurban these days IMHO the Sound Transit Central Link would come close. It lacks FRA regulation, uses a 1500vdc overhead, and may someday connect Seattle, Bellevue, and Tacoma. |
