Massapequa pocket track |

Posted by Joe on Mon May 20 10:32:16 2013 Over the past few days, several news stories have appeared concerning the rehabilitation of Massapequa station on the LIRR. The price tag was given as $40 million in some reports, $20 million in others. The explanation may be in Newsday's 5.18.2013 article by Alfred Castillo, "LIRR station to get face-lift." Not just a face-lift! One paragraph states:Half of the $40 million will go toward building a pocket track between the existing tracks. The pocket track will allow more trains to start out at the station, increasing train frequency and giving riders a better change of getting a seat in the morning. --- Great! Each morning one eastbound deadhead from the city passes the Wantagh interlocking and rests on Track 2 long enough for the engineer to walk through the train and become a westbound, Train 1103 I think. Each afternoon Train 1050 drops its last passengers in Wantagh and moves over to Track 1 for reversal. Both moves have windows allowing the walk-through, but a pocket track between Massapequa and Massapequa Park should help keep those trains out of traffic. I suspect that there is enough room for the 3rd track already, as the tracks are parallel for the short run between Massapequa and Massapequa Park. Joe |
