They were opposite downtown because when those terminals were built prior to the turn of the century Lower Manhattan was the undisputed CBD of the city. But just a few years later the subway and el greatly changed land use within Manhattan, allowing Midtown to overtake Lower Manhattan. That prompted the PRR to build their station along 34th rather than somewhere in Lower Manhattan. In fact the newer terminals along the Hudson, the NYC's Weehawken and NYSW's Edgewater terminals, were built across from Midtown Manhattan just as that area asserted itself.That trend toward Midtown has never reversed itself. |
