No, treason requires a bit more than that.President-elect Reagan negotiating with Iranian hostage-takers to keep Americans imprisoned and to prevent an American embassy from being released so that he, personally, could benefit by being the one to "free" them after he was inaugurated is probably treason. General Petraeus threatening the President by declaring that he would implement his preferred strategy in Afghanistan regardless of his orders is definitely insubordination and a particularly clever US Attorney could potentially argue that it's treason. A gang of armed men beating up an unarmed bystander? Cops or not, it's still just aggravated battery, a second degree felony, punishable by 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. I'm all for imposing more severe penalties for colour of law crimes, but at the moment attacking a cop is considered more severe a crime but a cop attacking a bystander is not. |
