I rechecked the topographical map. It now appears 9th St at 7th Av is 80 feet higher then 9th St at 4th Av (ground level elevation). The subway tracks cross 4th Av at 9th St about 20 feet above the street. The 7th Av station has a mezzanine so we must assume the subway tracks at that station are about 30 feet below street level. These two things would reduce the difference in track elevation to about 80-20-30=30 feet. Even rolling down a grade of only 30 feet a train with no brakes would still reach a top speed of 30 MPH. That speed , along with the tremendous inertia of all the cars on both trains, would account for the damage. If only single cars were involved I'm sure the damage would have been less.
