In fact, every borough in the city, except Staten Island, currently has long-term psychiatric care facilities. Other localities--especially big cities--maintain similar hospitals. No such facility has been "regulated" out of existence. There is a CDC mandate for a minimum number of psych beds--admittedly not enough, IMO--for a given catchment area, and some of these long-term beds are part of existing general hospitals. North Shore/LIJ in Queens, for example, includes Hillside Hospital, a 400-bed long-term inpatient psych hospital, about a mile east of Creedmoor, New York State's huge institution next to the Grand central Parkway. |
