Posted by David Fairthorne on Sat Aug 18 03:36:13 2012 I am visiting Beijing. The subway network has been expanding rapidly, and is expected to continue to expand. By 2015 there are to be 13 subway lines plus 6 additional subway lines in the suburbs. Most Beijing subway lines are underground, but an exception is line 13 which runs almost entirely above ground, using a pre-existing railway right-of-way and the median strip of an expressway. Line 13 has electrical supply between the tracks, so that the contact shoes are side running. The more modern lines have platform doors. Except on line 13, most stations have island platforms, but an exception is Haidanhuangzhuang on line 10, which is an interchange station with line 4, which has an island platform at that station. The subway runs from about 0500 to 2300. The fare is 2 yuan, regardless of distance traveled. Tomorrow I will catch a high-speed train to Tianjin. |
