The reason the R-40Ms went out there was that the Eastern Division passengers were promised A/C trains by a certain date and since the R-42s weren't ready as soon as expected, 3 6 car trains of R-40Ms were transferred from Jam Yd to ENY Yd and outfitted with Eastern Division signs for service on the 14 St Line. As soon as sufficient numbers of R-42s were available, the R-40Ms were transferred back to the IND. |
