Queens assemblyman trying to nix proposed $1 surcharge on MetroCards |

Posted by Gold_12TH on Fri Aug 3 02:02:19 2012 Assemblyman Edward Braunstein, D-Bayside, a member of the Transportation Committee, is disputing a planned $1 surcharge on new MetroCards purchased at Long Island Railroad vending machines. This is not the first time the assemblyman has reached out to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to rewrite this proposal, which was included in the MTA's 2013 preliminary budget. "Unlike MetroCard vending machines, LIRR vending machines are incapable of refilling previously purchased cards," said Braunstein. "The MTA justifies this surcharge by arguing that recycling MetroCards is good for the environment. Therefore, the MTA plan to promote refilling by adding a $1 surcharge for new cards serves no purpose at these machines and is unfair to commuters in the outer boroughs." "Many of my constituents purchase their new MetroCards at the vending machines at LIRR stations because they are only available outlets. After I reached out to the MTA and informed them of this problem, the agency still refused to reconsider the proposed surcharge." ---http://www.legislativegazette.com/Articles-Top-Stories-c-2012-07-31-81971.113122-Queens-assemblyman-trying-to-nix-proposed-1-surcharge-on-metro-cards.html |
