And we know that it's the rare Anglo who bothers to learn other languages. Of all the truly bilingual people in Canada, very few are native English speakers. On the other hand, the majority of Quebecois know at least some English, many are thoroughly bilingual. Brian Mulroony, a former PM, was native Eng speaking but grew up in Que. province. His French was flawless. I'm amused that some members here are annoyed that French survives at all in Quebec. "Should have been phased out," I see here. I'm willing to bet that many of these English-philes are also strong supporters of "States' Rights" here in the U.S.-- yet would deny a huge Canadian Province (the size of the U.S. east of the Mississippi) the VAST majority of whom are French speaking, the same right. Pretty funny, huh? |
