The morons in Quebec are fanatical about protecting the French language.Admittedly, the British never really pushed the Quebecois into English or Protestantism with the few attempts to do so leading to riots, and the rapid increase in the Quebecois population made it hard to stamp out the French speaking population in the first place. Even with immigration, the Roman Catholic immigrants from Ireland just ended up being absorbed into the French population due to religious cultural links. One could argue that much of the current legacy of the French language can be linked to the Quiet Revolution that turned Quebec from a rural backwater into a modern, highly urban society that coincidentally purged a sizable chunk of the Anglophone population once the Parti Quebecois came to power, and the transformation of the educational system into one where the French students actually had a chance to go to university, and the fact that Radio Canada and it's private francophone counterparts were more likely to bother with media productions that the citizenry didn't mind using. |
