The lack of streetcars/light rail in NYC is a stain on it, but that battle was over nearly 60 years ago.SEPTA has improved from its nadir, but they still have several commuter lines that haven't run through to their terminals in years, and they have a barely latent hostility to surface rail. They absurdly failed to restore street railway service on the 15 for over a year after it was ready for service because (they said) they didn't want to face down local residents over street parking on a stretch of a few blocks from the car house. They apparently would love to forget about restoring service on the 56 and 23. The latter has freshly rebuilt track near Germantown. They let most of the trolley system that survived NCL disappear by attrition. Abandonment by suspension. They still have a handful of lines, but have they extended any? (the partial restoration of 36 was another "suspension). Any new lines? Other cities that had none at all now have actual "systems," like Denver. Or car city: Los Angeles. Is their system actively maintaining a state of good repair, like New York? Are they opening new rapid transit routes, like Chicago? I like Philly a lot, but "best" seems like a political designation. |
