SEPTA is an underfunded joke of a system. The lack of funding is a huge reason why SEPTA is so deserving of this award. Despite the epic fail that was Act 44, SEPTA has managed to keep its head above water without being billions of dollars in debt, regularly slashing service by a severe margin, and steeply raising fares like most of the transit systems out there in the US. All the while being one of the first agencies in the nation to open its data to app developers and partnering with companies to test regenerative braking systems and such on its city rapid transit lines. I'm not mad, I just see the changes and improvements that SEPTA has been making on a daily basis and shake my head at the people who still yell at SEPTA for not running all of these streetcar lines throughout the city. All this despite the fact that it's in the minority when it comes to even HAVING a streetcar system, much less a system that's been in operation for so many years. Is there room for improvement? Of course, there's plenty! Are there crappy stations like Eddington? Sure, but then there are rebuilt stations like Langhorne, North Wales, Ambler, Fox Chase, and most recently Croydon that are fantastic. Is the fare system in need of an upgrade? Definitely so, but even this antiquated system allows people to buy passes that can be used on all the modes that SEPTA operates, and the new system will keep this in tact. All this at a time when the other big system in the state basically cut its service in half... |
