Doubled letters (AA, CC, GG, HH, etc.) are used for local trains, single letters are used for express trains, even if they are express for only a portion of their route. Note that the table above does not give any indication as to how a given letter code operates below West 4th Street in Manhattan. Under this scheme, any route that runs between The Bronx and Brooklyn could be called C, CC, D, or DD, depending on how it's routed through Midtown Manhattan. |
