Padron on Tue Jul 10 08:28:42 2012 Sixty-five years ago today on July 10, 1947, and as a preview for the future fleet of 400 IND-BMT cars purchased under the R-10 contract (and to arrive starting one year later), the prototype sample car #1575 [rebuilt from an R-7A originally built in 1938] was on display for public viewing at the IND 34th Street-6th Avenue station. It had already been seen in the same way the previous day at the Chambers Street-Hudson Terminal station. At Herald Square, the car was viewed by some 10,000 visitors from the hours of 11:00am to 8:00pm, by which interest had decreased by that time on that day. The photos that are linked here are most likely what the public would see inside as to the first post-WWII car design for the NYC subway system. And so it goes... R-7A #1575, NYCTA File Photo [1].
