Posted by JayZeeBMT on Sun Jul 8 21:41:42 2012 This couple is suing after being arrested and locked up for 'impeding the flow of traffic', disorderly conduct, and one of them was cited for not having proper ID.Of course, there's the "contempt of cop" angle--when they tried to film their encounter with the cops, the cops radioed for backup, and they were hauled off to jail, adding "resisting arrest" to their other charges--all for dancing to a steel-drum band on the platform! Although all charges were later dropped, the couple filed a federal lawsuit against the city. Moral: Do not test the authority of the police, because they can--and WILL--make your life difficult. During my time in EMS, I watched cops come up with all kinds of creative ways to charge people with things. There are LOTS of "catch-all" offenses with very, very broad definitions, that can be used to lock up anyone for virtually any reason. Freedom in NYC is a very ephemeral thing.
