Posted by Jersey Mike on Mon Jul 2 10:11:39 2012, in response to Re: PHOTOS: Last Run Fans, posted by monorail on Mon Jul 2 07:51:47 2012. The Valley flyover was used to fly Main Line track #4 over the freight tracks that were situated to the north of the Main Line through track between VALLEY interlocking and ZOO interlockings. I doubled as part of a flying junction to allow passenger trains to access the PRR Schuylkill Branch, with eastbound trains ducking under the main line via a tunnel. The switch between Main track #4 and the westbound Schuylkill Branch was at the west end of the flyover bridge.Until 1994 most westbound Main Line trains would fly up and over Main Line track #2 and various crumbling freight tracks and then head down the other side. When the Paoli Shoppes were closed SEPTA built the new Overbrook Mantainence facility on the RoW of track #4, with track #4 being relocated with a flat crossing over Main 2 at the new STILES interlocking. The bridge was already in a bad way and for the last 15 years SEPTA has been playing chicken with the city unable to close the Cynwyd branch, but unwilling to invest in improvements. It looks like SEPTA finally blinked. |
