If you are fired before you become vested then the contributions are refunded. Once you become vested, however, you cannot lose your pension. There are some very significant & complex rule changes that take place if you do not complete your minimum 25 years of service and if you are under age 55 when you are terminated or resign. In some cases, your pension is even reduced by 1/2 of your social security when you begin to collect.A friend retired after 21 years of service against advice. He was dropped from Tier IV to Tier III (the plan he was hired under) and was given 1 2/3% per year of service instead of 2% for 21 years, then when he began to collect social security, his pension was reduced another $700/month. |
