Political pandering, nothing more. It wouldn't hurt to make the MTA more accountable, but I'm guessing he's rather the public think that the MTA is the big bully that is solely responsible for cutting their buses and trains. As others have noted, the legislature bears responsibility for diverting money away from public transit. The bottom line is, it's his job and the job of his fellow legislators to determine how to help allocate the state's available tax revenues. If transit is important to him, then he should make the case in Albany. Of course, the legislature is also being asked for money by social service agencies and advocates, schools and their advocates, public safety agencies and advocates, cities and towns, proponents of the arts, public parks, and the like ... the list goes on and on. But if the assemblyman feels so strongly about public transportation, then fight the fight and tell a few of those others 'No' or 'Sorry, you're not getting as much'. |
