Proponents have sworn up and down that maglev would cost a mere $10 million per mile (wow, HBLR cost ten times as much) and operating costs would be 3¢ per mile, but already the estimated costs for infrastructure are being driven up in the USA to $50 million per mile and higher. It'd be remarkably fast runs from city to city, even transcontinental (NY-Chicago in possibly less than three hours, NY-LA in nine hours, NY-Miami in 4:45), but we still have those pesky infrastructure costs to address (a maglev from NY to Chicago would be $8 billion by the $10 million per mile estimate after all). |
