And soon enough, we reach the outskirts of Whittier, which is entered through...Whittier Tunnel! It's unique in that it's the longest combined vehicle-railroad tunnel in North America. Vehicles travel in one direction only in one lane, taking turns. The train track is in the middle of the lane. Cars and trains take turns using the tunnel. Our train arrived early and we waited 15 minutes before we could proceed:
